Divalicious in GenSan

THE NEWS that a bomb exploded in GenSan while the people here are celebrating the Kalilangan Festival was retracted by the police, saying that the explosion was not of bomb but rather of a hand grenade.

But even if it was bomb, there's no stopping Concert Queen Pops Fernandez from entertaining the people of GenSan in her Divalicious Concert tonight at Lagao Gym with RnB Prince Jay-R, Geneva Cruz, DAnilo Barrios, and Jimmy Marquez.

Pictures of the event will be posted here soon. Meanwhile, here's a poster I grabbed from GenSantos.com:

Ramiele Malubay, a Filipina on the American Idol 7

AFTER THE successful attempt of Jasmine Trias to be one in the Top 3 of the American Idol in 2004, another Filipina, Ramiele Malubay, 20, representing Florida, now tries her luck at being the 7th American Idol.

Ramiele's audition earned praises from the jurors. In fact, towards the end of this video, you would see Paula Abdul grooving to Ramiele's singing. Her prowess is compared to that of Aretha Franklin. And to many, to which I agree, she is a real hottie. All these might make Americal Idol followed glued on to news about the contest, and those who are not really followers of AI become interested.

So far, not much has been written about this talented lass of our blood. In a few days, she might be featured in local tv already and we would know of her roots.

What is good about this girl is she is proud of her being a Filipino. If you check her profile on the AI site, you would read that Lani Misalocha (should have been Misalucha) and Regine Velasquez are two of her musical influences.

A lot of people are saying that she's prettier and a better singer than Jasmine Trias. I hope this year, Ramiele would also do better than Jasmine. That is, being the 7th Americal Idol.

Pilgrim's Theme

HERE IS a lyrics of the song that my students will be using as their graduation song. The lyrics is just so wonderful and the music is heavenly.

PILGRIM'S THEME
Composer/Songwriter: Manoling Franciso, SJ

Tired of weaving dreams too loose for me to wear
Tired of watching clouds repeat their dance on air
Tired of getting tied to doing what's required
Is life a mere routine in the greater scheme of things?

Through with taking roads someone else designed
Through with chasing stars that soon forget to shine
Through with going through one more day - what's new?
Does my life still mean a thing in the greater scheme of things?

REFRAIN 1:
I think I'll follow the voice that calls within
Dance to the silent song it singsI hope to find my place
So my life can fall in place
I know in time I'll find my place
In the greater scheme of things

Each must go his way, but how can I decide?
Which path I should take, who will be my guide?
I need some kind of star to lead me somewhere far
To find a higher dream in the greater scheme of things
The road before me bends,
I don't know what I'll find
Will I meet a friend or ghosts I left behind?
Should I even be surprised that You're with me in disguise?
For it's Your hand I have seen in the greater scheme of things

(REFRAIN 1)

BRIDGE:
For Yours is the voice in my deepest dreams
You are the heart, the very heart
Of the greater scheme of things

(REFRAIN 1)

REFRAIN 2:
Why don't we follow the voice that calls within
Dance to the silent song it sings
One day we'll find our place
For all things fall in place
For all things have a place
In the greater scheme of things

An Music Video on the ZTE Scandal

THE CREATIVITY and sense of humor of Filipinos never fail. And it is usually during challenging times that products of these Pinoy characteristics come out.

Here is a catchy music video on the ZTE scandal posted on YouTube:

Others use this as a ringtone. You might want to download it into your phone, too.

On the other hand, things like these help raise the people's consciousness on what goes on in our government. It brings the issue closer some young people who tend to not care about it. It can make the skeptics, at least, curious on the issue. If campaigns like these are really thought-provoking, and if they can effectively convey the message, a public opinion could be shaped.

Pinoy Idol on GMA-7

Do you remember when GMA-7 changed the title of its show Pinoy Pop Idol to Pinoy Pop Superstar?

That was when ABC-5 was about to air the not-so-phenomenal Philippine Idol, the local version of the worldwide hit, American Idol.

But now, GMA-7 has already aquired the Idol brand from Fremantle, hence, the show Pinoy Idol is about to come to life.

The biggest question is, "Will GMA-7 make it Phenomenal This Time?"

Discussions abound on the net but probably, it will become a hit to the masses like many of GMA-7 shows.

First, Idol has already a big following in the Philippines even if the Philippine Idol was a flunker in the ratings. These fans will probably shift to GMA-7 to watch the show.

Second, GMA-7 has a wider reach compared to ABC-5.

Third, GMA-7 is quite aggressive, as usual, in promoting the show, backed by its drive to be the number TV network all over the country. Here is on the show's teasers:

The problem with the show is that it cannot be called the 2nd Season of the PI because ABC-5 still owns Philippine Idol, which is why GMA-7 named the show Pinoy Idol. Mau Marcelo, therefore is left to become the first and probably the last Philippine Idol. The rest, if GMA-7 will be successful, will be Pinoy Idols.

The show will be definitely be different from Philippine Idol.

First, Ryan Agoncillo will no longer be the host. Raymond Guttierez is rumored to host the show because PI host Ryan Agoncillo's contract with the rival network, ABS-CBN, restricts him from working with GMA-7.]

Second, Ryan Cayabyab will no longer be part of PI since he is the new Headmaster of Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2 on ABS-CBN.

The first season of Pinoy Dream Academy had successfully beaten Philippine Idol. This time, for sure, the TV ratings game will again be exciting as Pinoy Idol competes with Pinoy Dream Academy.

However, many people are thinking that the success of a talent search is not measured by the ratings it gets during its airing but on the quality or the level of stardom achieved by its product.

I hope these talent searches will really discover real Filipino music artists and add more life to the Philippine music industry.

Valentine Concerts This February

The season of love in the Philippines would not be complete with treating ourselves and our valentines with heartwarming songs. It has been part of our culture to go to concerts and watch our favorite artists song our favorite songs.

Here are some of 2008's most awaited Valentine Concerts:

öl4lüv (All For Love), featuring four of ABS-CBN's most popular young singers and products of talent searches, Sarah Geronimo, Erik Santos, Rachelle Ann Go, and Christian Bautista, will be serenading lovers on February 13 at the Araneta Coliseum.
What to expect: Timeless Love Songs sung with Vocal Calisthenics

On the same date at Teatrino Promenade, Greenhills, RnB singers and former bandmates Jay-R and Kris Lawrence, together with Karylle, will be showing that they are Souls in Love.
What to expect: Songs you can dance with, romantic songs sung in falsetto

On the day of hearts, listen to International Singer David Pomeranz, in his Valentine Show named after his popular song, which has been sung in many weddings in the Philippines, On This Day, which will be held at the PICC Plenary Hall.
What to expect: Pomeranz's greatest hits, surprise duets with local female singers

A trip down memory lane is what Joey Albert, Louie Reyes, Ding Mercado and Eugene Villaluz promise their romantic fans in Love Memoirs on Feb 13 & 14 at the Captain's Bar, Mandarin Oriental Hotel.
What to expect: Golden oldies

More concerts in this list

Here, we only have to settle with Eat-All-You-Cans because seldom do we have valetine concerts here in GenSan. I, with some of my friends here, am planning to go to one of those gastronomic treats on Feb 14. Some of those would have local bands singing acoustic songs.

But on Feb 16, Typecast, the band whose song Will You Ever Learn won NU's Song of the Year (2007), will be having a post-valentine concert at Tee Club Driving Range as part of Gensan's Kalilangan Festival.

I could watch concert that if I would still have money left in my pocket after Vday! :)

Total Eclipse of the Heart on ASAP 08

It's just amazing. I used to hate this song before. When I heard Westlife's version of it, I can't help but sing it at the top of my lungs at home.

But I don't like it that much, though. It still sounds a little bit cheesy but I salute those who can sing it well. It's a song for those who really have the talent.

Last Sunday, I saw the performance of the said song by local singers on ASAP '08. I could say that it was a good rendition but it was not really exceptional. There was too much noise. The audio mixing, I believe, was bad but it did not totally spoil the performance. Piolo Pascual was trying a little too hard to reach the notes, while Jed Madela sounded a little bit too operatic, which I believe was quite inappropriate or he did not blend well with the other singers. But overall, it was good.

At school, I saw some freshmen creating a karaoke version of the song using MS Powerpoint. Is there a sort of a Total Eclipse of the Heart fever? Lol.

Here's the lyrics of the song:

Total Eclipse of the Heart

Bonnie Tyler/Air Supply/Westlife

(Turnaround)
Every now and then I get a little bit lonely
and you're never coming around
(Turnaround)
Every now and then I get a little bit tired
of listening to the sound of my tears
(Turnaround)
Every now and then I get a little bit nervous
that the best of all the years have gone by
(Turnaround)
Every now and thenI get a little bit terrified
and then I see the look in your eyes
(Turnaround bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart
(Turnaround bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart

And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you'll only hold me tight
We'll be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
Cause we'll never be wrong together
We can take it to the end of the line
Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time
I don't know what to do and I'm always in the dark
We're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks
I really need you tonight
Forever's gonna start tonightForever's gonna start tonight

Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I'm only falling apart
There's nothing I can do
A total eclipse of the heart
Once upon a time there was light in my life
But now there's only love in the dark
Nothing I can sayA total eclipse of the heart

(Turnaround bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart
(Turnaround bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart
And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you'll only hold me tight
We'll be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
Cause we'll never be wrong together
We can take it to the end of the line
Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time
I don't know what to do and I'm always in the dark
We're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks
I really need you tonightForever's gonna start tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight
Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I'm only falling apart
Nothing I can say
Total eclipse of the heart
Total eclipse of the heart
Total eclipse of the heart
